My first visit to Guangdong province was in 1983 when I took the train from Hong Kong to Guangzhou. Unlike today, Guangzhou had no building over two stories high and bicycles were the main mode of transportation. Foolishly, I drank water directly from the tape and concocted typhoid. From there, I spent six days in a Bangkok public hospital.
